My purpose and spiritual vocation is informed by the intersection of faith and mental health. Throughout my experience as a counselor and clergy, I have encountered so many people that were hurt and harmed by the belief that their mental health challenges (considered illegitimate juxtapose physical health issues) were a result of not praying hard enough. Physical health challenges plague a few but mental health is a playground for the Enemy that impacts all of us, all of the time and in varying forms. I created Prayer and Prozac, the podcast and the movement, with the goal to bridge the gap between faith and mental health by fostering HOT! conversations: honest, open, and transparent.

 

Through the podcast, I explore how piety and professional mental health support can coexist harmoniously. I share narratives from the Biblical text to show that this is not new to God and I share a helpful prayer technique as a resilient strategy. As a movement, my core mission is to challenge the harmful stigma surrounding mental health within religious communities. I advocate for a comprehensive approach that encompasses prayer, spiritual disciplines, therapy and all that comes with it. Seeking professional help does not undermine one's faith but rather compliments it.

 

Prayer and Prozac seeks to empower individuals who have marginalized or misunderstood and find healing on their unique journeys. Through compassion, inclusivity, empowerment, authenticity, collaboration and integration, Prayer and Prozac is expressed practically with the following objectives: education and awareness, supportive community, partnerships, advocacy, resources, events and workshops, and online coaching.
